Meet Jodie, a traveling bard. Born and raised in Ohio, USA, she always had a passion for music and performance...even went to school for it (shout out to those Liberal Arts majors)! But her real passion is enjoying time with friends and family (a performance really isn’t as much fun by yourself). She remembers the first time she was invited to play D&D, 2nd edition. Her entire family sat around the table and helped her role up her first character: a male, elven fighter with a wolf companion (some of you will know her inspiration for that). From there, she was hooked! Not only was it fun to pretend to be someone else for a while, but she could also do it with her family! From there, she played off and on with a few others, but it was never the same as those nights with her family. Soon, she had to grow up, go to college, start a family of her own, and role playing took a back seat for many years.
Fast forward to 2012. She had to make a large move for her own family and discovered a renewed passion for role playing (FYI, she’s still a bard, only now she had a day job). Being the only one to step up and say, “I’ll do it. I’ll run the game,” she GM’d for the first time with family once again. They played frequently (well, as frequently as they could) for a few years, mostly in Pathfinder, but life has a way of interrupting the flow of hobbies, as it were, and we stuttered to a stop.
Then it came. The regular game on Tuesday nights. She was asked about starting up something for every week, again by family. It started when she discovered D&D 5e, and saw an opportunity to not worry so much about rules. It was time to be creative. They started a two-year campaign in a prewritten setting that often still finds itself in stories today. Once they began to wind down that campaign, they invited a few friends to join the family game and she ran another, nearly two-year, campaign. Finding this group still wanted to play, this is what has happened: Dungeons & Dad Jokes. Together, they decided to start streaming when they started the next campaign.
Jodie’s day job is in Education, but still finds time to play…often. She has played in several systems and across several genres through the years. Though 5e is the one she is most comfortable in, she definitely does not have a favorite. She has often acted like the “forever GM” but has found she actually enjoys running as much as playing. It really is an equal love. Being a GM or player doesn’t matter, what matters most to her is the table of family and friends she sees every week!
